Why?
Fix it...it's just a head gasket.

Because people just LOVE scrapping their cars - didn't you see the one who was thinking about scrapping his because of a broken coolant pipe fitting on the radiator?! Wasting the time of everyone who answers their questions, just to get an excuse to arrive at scrapping.misha wrote:Why?

This car even runs fine - it's just dumping coolant. I doubt there's much work involved here. Change head gasket. Drive car.
It's BS, that's what it is.

Yes it's kind of sad. Test the compression, if the transmission is good, fix it and drive it for another 5 years.
The thing I like best about these cars is the fact that just about everything can be fixed at home and can work, even on a 20 year old car. My car now has 294,000 miles and I drive it across country all the time. Everything works, radio, heated seats, windows, etc. Yes the front suspension is dead, and it leaks a little ps fluid, but that doesn't stop me from getting across the country anytime.
Go ahead, put it on CL for $250 and let someone that wants to save it take it under their wings.

Well I never thought I would disagree with my friend Robert DIY
1.) not everyone is a gear head. Some people use MVS to better understand whats going on with their car... and not necessarily to fix it.
2.) not everyone has the space for a down and out of commission car while doing the repair.
3.) not everyone has the time.
4.) its their car to do as they want after getting the answers to their questions.
5.) Head gasket is not an oil change.
That said, I'll be watching craigslist for it.
Just one mans opinion.

I confess I get a bit tweaked at the guys who dump repairable cars, but it is their life and their money they have to decide.
Lets face it, this is a Volvo enthusiasts' forum, so if one comes here for help and then bugs out, we take it a bit too personally.
However - these guys do provide an excellent continuing stream of cars for us to get our hands on for next to nothing..

Sorry to hear it. I can sympathize with your situation. Sell the car for cheap. A Volvo enthusiast will scoop it up and breathe new life into the car. Don't scrap a serviceable 850.jjohnston1013 wrote:...I'll be selling or scrapping. Ugh.

Let me tell you a head gasket on a 850 turbo car is a job that take a couple of special tools and alot of hair to pull out! It took me 5 weeks to do my head gasket, most of that time was waiting on parts that I didn't think I would need or that I broke. When I loosened the head bolts one broke off! It was a O-s%%% for sure. But with a left hand drill bit and a little know how I got it out, Big PITA
I guess I would conceder the head gasket a major repair for the avg. DYI guy.
