Hi everybody,
I have Volvo v70 ,2000 familial. I parked my car almost two months this summer, but when I tried to start up the car I noticed the flashing arrow ( the arrow which shows I am on low gear ) is always flashing. and whe I drive the car, it looks like the car starts from the third gear and not from the first one.
My friend scanned the error and found the following:
code 0039, gear shift position sensor faulty signal.
code 530 D malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
I am newer to Volvo and I wish somebody give me the chance to understand the problem and the repair.
I thanks in advance all the members for their help and support.

2000 V70 gear problem
"precopster" had a good post in this sight for the adjustment/check of your shift cable for the AW50-42LE trans. If its out of adjustment this might might be a faulty position sensor. ('99 V70 shift cable adjustment, was the title)
The flashing arrow was a EPA/MPG thing that was to help you get the best MPG by having you shift to higher gears quickly, and with an automatic trans, just select D. I think it only comes on when the gear selector is in lower gears than D, so if its on in D than that also would seem to support the cable out of adjustment.
If your indicators are on 3 when it should indicate D, possible adjustment issue.
I'm thinking this is a good place to start, and is a possible cheap solution.
The other code would be the check engine light being burnt out. If you turn the key to on and your dash lights are on, I'm guessing the CE is not on?
I have to replace that CE bulb in mine too!

Actually the flashing arrow is an error indicator and the transmission, as you observed, reverts to a limp mode that fixes it in third gear. It is much like you are dragging around a safe from a stop and it is tough on the transmission.
The usual culprit is the Park-Neutral Position (PNP) switch. Sometime that switch gets out of adjustment and it can be tweaked back into a working range by loosening the screws and rotating it but more often than not the contact grease inside of the switch has dried out and the switch doesn't make consistent electrical contact. Rowing the shifter back and forth between low and park, quickly, a couple of dozen times can often loosen up the dried grease and it will work again and buy you some time but the real fix is to either replace the switch or replace and re-lubricate the contacts inside of the switch. If you try to adjust the switch you need to observe the reverse lights in a mirror and adjust it so that the are illuminated when the shifter is in the reverse position.
Adjusting the switch is analogous to adjusting the shift cable.
