Hi, I am rather new to this series of Volvo. I had a 144 in high school and a 245 wagon in college. After a 20 year break from Volvos, I just acquired a 2001 V70 T5 wagon last week that was a friend's car. It has 205K but is in great condition inside and out. Only thing I've done to the car so far is wash it and replace a few burnt out bulbs.
It had a bunch of work done in July...new Volvo automatic transmission, new struts, new front end bushings, and the AC was repaired...all done by the Volvo dealer in Bend, OR.
The only driveability issue is a mild surge felt only at light throttle with the engine at about 1600RPM on level or slightly downhill grade. There is no CEL. Holding 1500RPM in the driveway the engine runs smooth with no misfire.
My plan is to replace the spark plugs and the fuel and air filters and see if that fixes it.
If that doesn't help, should the MAF and PCV system next on the list?
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Mine did this right before the ETM failed. But with 205k miles I doubt you have the original ETM. What color is the sticker on the ETM? If it is white you might look into that as your source of the problem.

Sure enough I have a ETM with a white sticker. I suppose I should budget for that failing before too long. I think I'll clean it for now and replace it with a xeMODex unit when it goes.
That may be an opportune time to service the PCV system while everything under the manifold is apart.

Take a peek at the second line if you can;

means 2010, week 35 build. Its possible someone replaced it with a used one and they last about 10 years.

Well I carved some time out this weekend and I first changed the air filter which was pretty dirty and went for a drive the throttle response was improved. I then changed the spark plugs and fuel filter. The back story is the car belonged to a friend of mine that passed away at the end of August and his wife gave me a great deal so I bought the car at the end of September. He had the car since 2005 and it had about 50K when he bought it. It now has 206K.
There is still a miss at light throttle under 2K rpm. There are is no check engine light. There was a CEL when I picked up the car....I had the code read at an auto parts store and they said it was evaporative emissions slow leak and likely from the gas cap....it was reset and has not recurred. At this point I suspect it's the ETM. It's a little worse since the temperature has gotten colder so I am going to use some MAF sensor cleaner to see if it makes a difference. How it feels is that there is a position where the TPS portion of the ETM is giving faulty information. Also, at about the same 1500-1800 rpm it misses a little when accelerating just after its first fired up when cold....trying to give as much info as possible....that may just be the 206K miles.
Am I wasting my time trying to clean the throttle body or should I just resign myself that it needs to be replaced? If the videos on Youtube are any indication, it doesn't look all that hard, just a little time-consuming.
Also....is the TB gasket re-usable? I see they're not expensive, so I'll probably add one to my next parts order.
**Added on edit...the car is definitely running better. Crisper throttle response, especially in the lower RPM ranges. I did put half can of Seafoam in the fuel on Sunday......so maybe it's working through the fuel system...but still a slight surge with light throttle in that 1500-1800 rpm range on a slight down grade that I drive every day on my way home. I can live with it the way it is...but I think I'll start saving for a ETM.
Thanks!
