2005 XC70 clicking under shifter
2005 XC70 clicking under shifter
When I start the car, there is a clicking noise under the shift lever. It does stop after a minute or two. I can feel the shift lever moving slightly. Car has 160K on it. Shifts fine after the clicking stops. I do not try to shift until it does stop. Any ideas?

could you be talking about the shift interlock? is it the same click you hear when you step on the brake?bwiday wrote:When I start the car, there is a clicking noise under the shift lever. right. there is an interlock on the gear shift that prevents the driver from putting the vehicle into gear unless the brake pedal is depressed. it is basically a solenoid that gets energized and retracts. when retracting you hear a click. this is a common safety device.bwiday wrote:Transmission shifter, gear select lever.
with the engine off, radio off, blower off, etc. turn the key to position II. step on and release the brake multiple times, you will hear the interlock disengage and engage as you step and release the brake. you will likely fell a small vibration in the gear shift knob.
is this the noise?

Wondering if anyone knows what module is connected in line with this solenoid to make it continually click without depressing the brake pedal? Just had my dim rebuilt and still having lots of electrical issues. Car automatically shifts into Winter mode, cluster lights up then all needles bottom out.

I'm thinking you have a CEM or CEM connector issue which is common on this model and year. The CEM is above your left foot on the driver side. Remove it and inspect for water damage (blocked sunroof drains may cause water to leak onto it). Remove main connector and clean with circuit cleaner (that fixed 90% of my problems). Xemodex has good diagnostics on this issue or you can just search it on this forum.
