1995 850 (Auto) Drive Mode Switch Not Working

Post by KrazyKrusty »

Hey Volvo Fans, This is my first Forum post on this site.

I just thought I'd share my latest fix on my 1995 Volvo 850 wagon. I had been worried about my Drive mode switch not illuminating (Little Leds that are green and orange on the center console). Since they didn't light up, I'm not sure it was working, and i know the Upshift light is supposed to come on when you push the winter button. Upon looking up on the "original technical publications" program for the Volvo 850's that I bought off of FCP Euro, I was able to study the wire diagram for the automatic Transmission circuitry. Oddly enough, the power for the Drive mode switch (The Econ, Sport, and Winter modes) comes through the Transmission upshift light or the Up arrow in the cluster. Sure enough when I turn the key on and all the dash lights are supposed to light up, that up arrow didn't. So once I took the cluster out and replaced the bulb, everything worked like it should, and saved me from buying another drive mode switch, which i originally figured was faulty.
So if you're having trouble with your drive mode switch not illuminating, take the time to diagnose, and see if the upshift arrow light is working.

Thanks Guys, Love this site, Very very Helpful so far

Andrew
