1999 V70 N/A Immobilizer

Post by Shappy »

Was having ABS activation on dry paved roads. No dash lights. Discovered rusty tone ring. After replacing the ring on LF axle the brakes are working fine but the ABS and check engine lights appeared. Cleared ABS code 0011. I now can’t start the car – runs momentarily then dies – and I now have code ECM 720A Immobilizer Faulty Communication. Tried to clear that but it just keeps coming back. What do I need to do to get this sucker to run again! HEEELLP!

I have had issues with the immobilizer getting confused after resetting the codes before and the car won't run until I take out the key and put it back in. That said, usually it is a bad connection at the antenna ring and unplugging the connector and giving it a shot of contact cleaner will cure it. You need to remove the collar around the steering column to get to the connector.

Thanks Ozark! I've had the key(s) in and out many times; waited hours; removed the ring and disconnected/cleaned the connector contacts. No change. I'm feeling a bit desperate now.

The immobiliser is on the 1999 are integrated into the car electronics but VIDA can help you sort out what isn't talking to what.

Thanks abscate. Unfortunately don't have VIDA, or a compatible computer O/S even if I did. My Autel MaxiDiag Elite MD802 has screwed me up?

I would dearly love it if someone can tell me how to permanently bypass/eliminate the immobilizer function. Surely my German Shepherd in the back is sufficient to deter someone interested in stealing a bright red 16 year old wagon.

Possibly but not likely. I screwed up my '99 with VOL-FCR and had to get another ECU cloned to fix it. In order to screw things up that badly it took me lying to VOL-FCR and telling it that the car was a was a '98 and then I started interrogating things.

You really need to get a VIDA/DICE scan to go much further. With VIDA you can figure out if the immobilizer isn't seeing the chip in the key or if the ECU and the immobilizer module are not agreeing on the answer to the question.

Last gasp, make sure you only have one key on the ring, there are reports here that multiple keys can mess this up. You do need VIDA on a 1999 to move forward.

The AUTEL 800 series scanners are great..one day I used it on all five cars I my fleet for different reasons!!

Yes, only one key at a time and others not near the car. Also tried locking/unlocking the doors several times with each key. No luck.
