1999 V70-XC Inner CV Boot replacement

Post by PapaHepcat »

I've had the hardest time replacing my front passenger CV axle. Tried two different places who special ordered and the replacements didn't fit. Ordered one from eeroparts.com, waited for two weeks while it shipped, and that didn't fit either. Argh!

So I think I'll just replace the inner boot. Really, that's where this started. But how do I get it on? Mine is lobed (I think that's the term), so uni-boots won't work. This one will:

Is there a way to disassemble the inner joint without destroying it?
Current car:
1999 v70 xc Silver, 170k miles

Non Volvo cars:
1991 Ford F-350, 80k(180k?) miles
2004 Toyota Sienna, 124k miles

For INNER boot, I use Audi boot, also made by GKN Lobro.

See my post from 20 Mar 2015:
DIY: 1998 V70 Axle CV Rubber Boots Tips/Tricks

PS: This DIY was written for 1994-1998 model. However I think 1999 is similar in the setup. The difference is only in the axle nut (1994-1998) vs bolt (1999+).

According to Volvo, PN fits also 1999 model:

Very helpful, thanks. You try that turning inside-out and slip over trick? I watched the video from early in the thread. Can't believe that actually worked

I just did this on my 98 V70 AWD, the risk of tearing the boot by stretching it didn't sit well with me. I completely took the shaft apart by knocking the CV off the spline. This ended up being extremely easy and it honestly took me longer to clean up the old grease then it did to take apart, repack and put back together. I used redline CV grease on mine as it's the original lobro and I would like to try to keep them as long as possible.

Ignore that video I posted earlier in the DIY. I just posted the video but never tried it.

Best is the Audi boot, which is essentially the same as the factory Volvo boot.
I have used the Audi GKN INNER boot now since March 2015, it is a perfect fit.

The 99 axles are different, is anyone sure that inner boot for a 98 will actually work on this car? I know the outer boots are different for sure, I have one that FCP sent me by mistake.

I also vote for taking the CV off the axle, it is usually very straightforward. Usually.

By now, the OP should have been done with the CV job, but here is what I found out.

the inner CV boot I'm showing part number 31256221 which can be found here: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-31256221

Inner CV boots above is for 99 V70XC.
FCP site after selecting year, maker, model, option still showed incorrect part.
So, I had to let FCP know the VIN to find correct one.

I ordered 2 boots. one from Napa. Way too small & way over priced with shipping charge added. Ordered another one, a little shorter than what I had one the driver side axle.

once you have the axle out, you need to remove the notch (depressions) on the inner shaft cup. the 3 rollers will not come out unless you remove those the tiny depressions. I will probably replace the axle next time.

I don't know why Volvo designed the axle as none replaceable inner boot.
