1999 S40 dashboard failure after battery replace

Post by laurentius »

Hi Guys,

I am the happy owner of a S40 volvo made 1999 .

Recently I had to recharge the battery and when I re installed it the dashboard failed to display the total km. , water temp., fuel level, rot/min, and the speed during driving, however car is wirking fine, all fuses are ok, nothing seem to be fried.

From time to time, when ingiting all these functions work normally but after a time simply dissaper, and during the next start can not be seen....

Did any of you encountered such failure? what was the cure for this?

Any help is highly appreciated

many thanks
laurentius

The most likely situation is that your battery is at the end of its life, done, finished. All the charging in the world won't help old batteries.

You can test this by swapping in a known good, recently new battery for a drive.

I am afraid the battery should not be problem because is 1 y old /Bosch / and it went down because we left the light on during the night . After 6 hours of recharge it works prefectly

These batteries are not designed for deep discharge.
Even though it may seem to be working perfectly, I would still do a voltage check on the battery and the generator. It does not take that long and will eliminate the guesswork. Numbers do not lie
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

thanks, battery check will be doen first thing tomorrow morning . However, from those I see I am afraid it would be a simple contact failure somewere in the electric system (loose contact, maybe due to oxidation..) and the charge of battery has nothing to do with the dashboard fail.

how can at one ingnition display well the board, and after an engine stop and 2 min. later , with the next ignition dashboard is partly dead ? this happend 3 times during 2 days after battery recharge. grrr.

So, battery voltage OK , wiring okay. I removed the speedometer, disassambled it while I was waiting for another speedometer . Finally the new speedomerter was not sent , and I reinstalled the old unit.

Miracle happend! everyhting is working fine since Friday :-)
