1998 S70 Need Timing Belt Kit

Post by ferocity02 »

My 98 S70 has 187K miles on it and I have no idea when the timing belt was last replaced. I bought it about 10k miles ago and the previous owner did not keep very good records. I am left to assume that it's never been replaced (but realistically it probably has).

I am looking for a quality timing belt kit but I don't need one that's made of gold. I put maybe 3k miles on this car per year and honestly I probably won't have it for anymore than another 20k miles.

I've had my eye on the Gates timing belt kit (TCKWP252) which comes with everything including a water pump. I trust Gates when it comes to belts so I figure their timing belt kit would be adequate. It's also rather affordable, around $200 if you look around.

FYI my engine serial number is <1266127

Thanks!

That's good advice from Russ. You can also get the quality TBelt kit for cheap from a Volvo dealer (online, not walk-in, often walk-in prices are obscene), but those links would be a simple one-stop at FCP.

I see that Gates kit is for the cars with the hydraulic tensioner. The "kit" I listed was with the mechanical tensioner.

Sorry about that

Belt and both rollers, Volvo branded, $120, http://volvopartslisle.com/part/OEM-Vol ... h-Belt-Kit
Water pump go with the FCP one, $75.
Hydraulic tensioner, Volvo branded, $82, http://volvopartslisle.com/part/OEM-Vol ... ng-Element

OK so it will run you $75 more than the Gates kit, you will have to think it over. I would almost always spend the extra $75 on the timing components, fwiw.

Aisin Water Pump: $80 or so.
TB kit from Volvo dealer PN 30758260…$110.
Hydraulic Tensioner: Aisin only.

Stay away from Gates, search forum and you will have the answer.

TB components are not a place to save $.

Thanks for the replies. I see the Gates have had some issues with the belts walking/rubbing?

How about a Conti TB kit: Conti belt, GMB idler, Ina tensioner roller, Aisin hydraulic tensioner. Then add in a Aisin water pump? Looks like that will run me around $260.

GMB idler is no go, rollers should both be INA. Aisin hydraulic tensioner yes, that is same as Volvo branded. It is cheaper from the dealer if you use Lisle.

You're not going to find anything cheaper than the links I posted up there, $280 for the lot. Unless you go with a cheaper water pump somewhere. Yes there will be shipping charges too.

Thanks again. My local dealer is willing to do $130 for the belt and rollers.
Aisin pump is around $60 (Volvo dealer wanted $117).
Aisin tensioner is about $80.

Or would you recommend the Volvo tensioner? It's about $10 more than Aisin.

Factory Volvo water pump and hydraulic tensioner are both made by Aisin
