Attempting to adjust wastegate rod

Post by Bren »

Just want to do one turn on it but the rod is pretty rusty and I can't turn the part on the end of the rod independent of the rod itself - the rod wants to just spin with it...

Any harm if I grab the rod with some vice grips to hold it in place while I spin the end?

This is on a 98 V70r

If you have already twisted the actuator rod, you have destroyed the wastegate. There are many write-up here and on the internet

I haven't spun it at all but can tell it seems to freely spin

Should I hold it in place somehow?

If the actuator rod spins at all, it is broken.

Ah. So maybe that's what's causing my sluggish performance...?

But I guess if the wastegate is effed its not opening at all? That would be causing too much boost no?

If it was causing too much boost, then you probably wouldn't have "sluggish" performance. My WG was stuck half open for a while, and that certainly made things feel "sluggish".

Alright well i checked it and the rod doesn't actually spin - only very slightly

I put it all back - i'm sure i'll know if the wastegate is toast very quickly tomorrow when I have a chance to take it out...

OK well I adjusted the rod one turn and it didn't really make a big difference...if any.

It certainly isn't boosting TOO much - still feels a bit sluggish to me...perhaps I should try one more turn?
