Another update. After another 4000 miles and a couple of months it's leaking again. This time when I pulled the stud out, it was still snug and there were still signs of the red RTV, although the RTV didn't seem well bonded to anything.
I tried blue thread locker this time. Fingers crossed....
At this point I'm wondering if the stud is really where the oil is coming from. The end of the stud that protrudes from the head is the highest oily spot on the engine. There is ample oil on the part of the stud that sticks out of the head, but only traces on the portion that is inside the head. Looking into the hole for it, I can't see any passages for oil, and it would seem to me that if there were any, I would find oil when I fish around in the hole with a q-tip. I don't.
On the other hand, sealing it with the aviation sealer and RTV stopped the leak for awhile.
This is all going on right above the seam between the head and the block. There is oil on the block, but that's below the stud. It seems unlikely that a leak at the seam would soak the stud in oil without covering other parts of the exhaust manifold in the vicinity. I guess if it leaks again, the exhaust manifold will have to come off so I can get a better look.
I'll keep you posted....
