1995 Volvo 850 Turbo flashing yellow arrow and check engine

Post by winslow58 »

have a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo, I recently drove it to the mountains, and afterward the flashing arrow light and check engine light began. I did diagnostic test via the diagnostic box on the vehicle, and the only code I get is 2-2-2, after clearing the code the check engine light goes off and flashing arrow stops temporarily. After checking the 2-2-2 code, it seems to have something to do with the fuel injection, not anything about PNP sensor or transmission. Help!

What port did you interrogate with the OBD-I? The transmission port is A-1 and a 2-2-2 from port A-1 is an open circuit on shift solenoid #2 (S2 solenoid).

It was port a1 on OBDII, i thought it translated to the fuel injection. So is this something to do with the transmission? Is this a costly repair is so? I noticed the transmission fluid is very dirty if i change it will that help?

First thing I would confirm the code with the OBD-I port under the hood plugged into port A-1. An OBD-II scanner would have returned a Pxxxx code format and the P code equivalent for a 2-2-2 flash code is P0755. Some scanners don't read transmission codes at all.

The flashing up arrow is a transmission error indication and it will typically (but not always) trigger the CEL as well.

I doubt changing the fluid will help with a shift solenoid error but the fluid will need to be drained to get to the solenoid. The solenoids are not insanely expensive, I think they are about $125.00. The labor to change them, if you use a shop, I would guesstimate at about $300.00. Changing the solenoid is very easy but getting the pan off of the transmission is a bear.

An open shift solenoid would cause some serious driveability problems. How does the car drive other than the flashing arrow? The most common automatic transmission problems on the 850 are usually caused by the PNP switch being dirty or the contacts in the switch wearing out and the default limp mode with transmission is for it to default to 3rd gear. It acts like you are dragging a safe behind the car when you accelerate from a stop sign.

Thanks for the advise, how can I determine if it is indeed the Solenoid or PNP sensor. The car drove perfect before I drove to the highly elevated mountains, guest the climbing caused something to go wrong, I've changed the PNP on my earlier 94 Volvo 850, don't anything about the solenoid. Thanks again for your information.

When the flashing does show up the car will barely move, until I put it in third gear, then it will eventually take off. I then go under the hood and clear the 2-2-2 code and it will be alright for a few miles.

I'm sure at this point that its the S2 Transmission solenoid that is bad. Does anyone know how I can locate that part. All the autoparts places I've contact seems to not be able to get the part new or used. It seems to be discontinued, Oem part #6843783. Thanks for any help or leads!

Can't speak to quality but at that price I might replace all the solenoids while I was there.
