Unplug VVT solenoid and see if your surge is gone.

Ok, I'll try that when I figure out where the VVT solenoid is.vtl wrote:Unplug VVT solenoid and see if your surge is gone.
And will unplugging that throw a code?
**Ok, that didn't take long to find.

vtl, you may have just hit the nail on the head. I unplugged the VVT solenoid and with only one 10 minute drive under my belt, it was different. I couldn't notice any surge in the usual place I do on my way home every day, so I am hopeful. I'll report back after another couple of days of driving. I'd rather replace a VVT solenoid than a ETM. Though I am saving my pennies for an ETM, knowing it sounds like it's only a matter of time.vtl wrote:Unplug VVT solenoid and see if your surge is gone.
On an unrelated note...if I call the service department at the Volvo dealer where the late previous owner had it worked on, will they be able to tell me what was done to the car at a major service in July?

White label Magneti Marelli ETM in wife's 2002 V70 (built in 2001) is still fine. I think it only fails if the seal is compromised.Gymbo wrote:vtl, you may have just hit the nail on the head. Try to clean solenoid first (buy a new gasket too). If it would not help, replace it. If it still surges, you have a bad VVT hub.
Yes, they keep all the records. On an unrelated note...if I call the service department at the Volvo dealer where the late previous owner had it worked on, will they be able to tell me what was done to the car at a major service in July?

Thanks. I'll order a new gasket and dig into it later this week.vtl wrote:I did it sort of naively, by disassembling everything I could. It's not really a complicated piece of machinery.

You're right, I called and found out the previous owner sunk almost $10k into the car in July....new transmission, all new struts and shocks, control arms, tie rod ends, etc. So the car basically has an entirely new suspension. I knew he'd had quite a bit of work done, but I didn't realize it was that much.vtl wrote: Yes, they keep all the records.
I've got a new VVT solenoid gasket coming tomorrow. It actually seems to be running better since unplugging and plugging back in the VVT solenoid.
I did have a return of the check engine light like I had when I first picked up the car a month ago....the parts store said it was the same code as before..slow leak evaporative emissions. Combined with an oddball warning last week that said I left my gas cap off(which I didn't), I think I might replace the gas cap seal and see what happens.
**added on edit...the check engine light went out before I could get to the auto parts store this afternoon and the car seems to be running the best it has since I got it. Weird.
