Hi there.
This summer I had a bit of a strange issue with the t5.
Everytime I parked it a bit uphill. so nose higher than back, it would not start as normal.
I really had to crank it for almost a minute or more. While cranking it did nothing until it would finnaly give a few hickups, hang against compression and then start.
And the longer it would sit like this, the longer i had to crank it.
It was unussualy warm where I was. over 40degrees celsius.
when I parked normally there was absolutely no problem. Ever.
Can anyone think of an easy explenation for this?
I was allready thinking of a broken fuel pump, but it has no issues with speed or throttle. So..

Welkom op MVS!
If you have high miles/kms on your engine, these engines sometimes suffer from something called 'lawn mower syndrome' which makes hard starting.
Excess fuel washes down oil from the cylinders which causes poor compression and hard starting.
If you have leaking fuel injectors or a bad engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, this can make this happen, too.

Form the last two weeks my 2000 V70 XCS has had the same thing happen for no reason. I have yet to dig into it but I want to swap out the fuel relay first. If the ECT is going bad won't the temp guage in the binacle show erroneous display? It does'nt do the no start at first start in the morning but if it sits for three or four hours after first start is when I have encountered this problem.

I would start with the fuel relay. It's the less expensive start. I had this same issue a while back and went straight in to the fuel pump, dropped a chunk of dollars and still had the issue, found it on amazon for cheaper than anywhere else and had in a couple o days.

I bought the car quite cheaply so I had my share of strange issues in the car 
I had the revving by itself issue. Wich is the Temperature sensor. ECT you call it, I think. Yes when it revs by itself, it will move the temperature needle strangly up and down.
I had the lawnmower syndrome twice after starting and stopping the engine very fast after each other. You can hear it crank faster than normal and it is easily fixed by taking out the benzinepump fuse and just cranking a few times. Even better with plugs out.
I had the fuel relays problem. Both. So a year ago I bought dealer shiny new ones for both and even had to change a bit of wiring to make it work proper.
Never a problem again with that.
This feels like it looses fuel pressure somehow and has to pump it all the way up again. Cause the shorter time I stop uphill, the faster it would start up again.
And unlike with the relay, it always started again after cranking it for ten seconds to a bit over a minute.
With the relay problems, it would just not start at all. And ten minutes later it would like normal.
So I am thinking about pressure. And now its colder I havent had it once in the last month.
I can hear the fuelpump whining a bit from the back when the seats are folded down.
Most of the ignition is all new. Rotor, cables, cap, sparkplugs. maybe a pressure regulator or a hose at there?

I have not checked the fuel filter. I replaced it half a year ago though. somehow I dont like the fact that it is not really tied to the lines.
And I must admit I have the habit of running on the last fumes of benzine...
The waiting to start with contact on is a good idea! I will try it next time.

I just changed the injector seals on my mercedes and was thinking about doing the volvo too.
Its a simple inexpensive job and it has relevance to this problem.
I read that a leaking injector can make the fuel pressure drop and hence I have to start it for some time.
Or maybe the injectors are filthy.
who has some experience with cleaning them or swapping the seals?
Is it a world of difference?

I called Volvo, asked the price and just ordered them. 5 rubbers for in the rail. 5 for on top of the injectors. 5 for the bottom of the injectors. And the 5 rubbers for in the manifold.
66 euro. not that expensive and it can only get better.
For my v8 benz the whole shebang was 90 euro. So quite in perspective.
Anyway. I have a pile of rubber in front of me now.
Tomorrow I go fiddle.
Just need to find an adress to clean them too..
