Someone pinched the gasket reinstalling the manifold, it folded slightly, and then eventually starting leaking.

Well done and a great example of using all the information to diagnose a problem.

I think your compression tested good up thread so you should not have to worry about a valve burning from the cold air leak. That's usually a worry on the exhaust side, anyhow.
