1994 Volvo 850 Remove & Replace Manual HVAC Control

Post by a061469 »

I have a 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon Base model, and I'm going to have to replace the Manual HVAC Control Unit mounted in the dash with a new one on its way in the mail because the connection between the Mode Knob and the unit (plastic parts) have disintegrated. I was able to remove the knobs and the brass colored screws beneath the knobs, as well as the faceplate and 4 brass colored screws holding the unit in. However, I can't figure out how to remove and reconnect the 3 or 4 Control Cables that are connected to the rear of the Manual HVAC Control Unit. So, could anyone enlighten me and tell me how to remove and replace the Control Cables on the Manual HVAC Control Unit?

It is a bear and a half. I disconnected the cables from the climate unit and then pulled the controller out with the cable still attached when I had to repair one on my '94. It was very difficult to get the cables out even when they were disconnected but I was able to do it by turning the unit a bit sideways and pushing it back into the dash and then over to one side.

Thanks, I figured it wouldn't be easy.
1) Do the cable ends attach like a shoulder socket and just snap on and off, or are they screwed on?
2) Do you have to disconnect the cables from wherever they go first and then pull the control out with the cables attached, or are you able to disconnect them from the control by turning it sideways?
3) I noticed there is a black cover on the back of the control unit that prevents me from getting access to the cable connections. How do you get the black plastic cover off the back without breaking it?

Thanks,
Kevin

The climate unit ends of the cables are secured with a clamp that holds the jacket and then as I recall there is a loop on the inner part of the cable that goes around the respective damper levers. I wasn't able to get the cables free from the control until after it was removed.

There are some illustrations in the factory service manual that somewhat detail the connections and it also has some fairly critical measurements that you need to establish to make it work again properly after you put it back in.

The manual is here:

After you download it and unzip it see the file named ac heater system manual.pdf and it will help you out.

Thanks Lee, I'll give it a try as soon as I get the new control unit.

Thanks Again,
Kevin
