1990 740 Turbo Auto trans shifting issue

Post by 5ft24 »

My trans has solid shifts, Fluid not burnt.
Symptoms:1-2 shift normal speed. 2-3, hangs in 2nd until I almost completely take my foot off the gas. 3-4 quick. 4-3 downshift with very little throttle.
Throttle cable to trans has been backed off almost as far as it can go.
Ideas?

Probably related to the kick down cable.

It has been adjusted by the manual's procedure, and even backed off a TON to see if it made any difference... None with the 2-3 shift. and manually pulling the cable there isn't any binding or sticking

While reading about adjusting the kickdown cable (I recently had an issue with shifting on my 1988 760 Turbo Wagon) I noticed mention of first checking the adjustment of the throttle linkage.

Did you make or install an OD shift plate via removing solenoid?

Nope. Haven't touched the trans itself. I am planning on doing a fluid/filter change when the weather lets up a little here. Just because I don't know when it was ever done.

No need to replace the filter screen. Just remove the drain plug to drain the pan (holds about 4 quarts). Replace with new dexron lll fluid . Do a fluid flush if needed.

Push the OD button several times, when driving.

There is a higher viscosity transmission fluid...which might be a good idea.

Is Dexron III still available, or has it been completely replaced with the Synthetic Blend Dexron V or VI?

Technically speaking, NO; GM does use it any more.
