1998 S70 2.4L Turbo... Cam Timing Suggestions?

Post by ferocity02 »

This weekend I will be tackling the timing belt as well as the front cam seals. I have read that it is possible to adjust the cam pulleys slightly to advance or retard the cam timing with a range of ~10 deg.

What timing would you all aim for for my car situation. It's a 1998 S70 GLT 2.4L turbo with 188K miles on it. My wife drives it and her right foot is as light as a feather. I doubt it sees over 2K RPM when she's driving, and I also doubt it ever gets into boost.

With that said, I would aim more towards improving low-end response rather than top-end power. So would I want to advance both cams slightly?

Thanks!

Changing the cam timing has tradeoffs and you can get more low end torque out of it or more top end speed but the differences are fairly marginal. Unless this is part of a tune and you are getting the ECU re-programmed it is really just best left at the center positions.

If you do want to change it anyway here are some tips:

Keep in mind that changing the cam timing also changes the ignition timing.

Did the timing belt today and all went well. The exhaust cam was fully retarded and the intake cam with centered. Upon reinstall, I advanced both cams slightly with no perceivable change in performance.
