1997 S90 (960) Will not start with Camshaft Position Sensor

The engine control module had DTC EFI-314 Camshaft position sensor signal. I the replace the Camshaft position sensor, the engine will not start.

If I unplug the Camshaft position sensor, the engine starts and runs with DTC codes for Camshaft position sensor signal. Reconnect the Camshaft position sensor it runs with no DTC codes.

Shut off the engine and I got to unplug the Camshaft position sensor to get it started again.

Anybody know what is going on and how to correct this?

Has anyone had the drive piece bolted to end of the cam off lately? That signal generator piece (reluctor? magnetic blocker?) is very easy to install wrong on that car where you can't see what you're doing. That will cause your symptoms. Once you start it unplugged when you plug it in the ECM ignores it as it is already in limp mode.

Your previous post indicated unusual symptoms.

I rather suspect a recording oscilloscope is needed to see cam-sensor's waveform. I did cite that article.

I believe you have Motronic 4.4, but check out these two posts:

jimmy57 : The car came with the problem. I do see evidence that the previous owner has done work on the Camshaft Position Senor. It is possible he got blocker installed wrong. This being an easy fix I'll try it first.

93Regina: The 97 S90 (960) does have Motronic 4.4. If the other idea does not work, I will look into this next.

It might be this weekend before I can get anything done. Will keep you all informed.

Solved!

As suggested by jimmy57, I pulled the Camshaft Position Senor rotor cup. The larger of the two keys was bent over and the cup was installed 180 degrees out of phase.

Bent the key back out and reinstalled the rotor cup with the correct phase. Engine now starts and runs as it should.
