With battery disconnected, did you try remove and reseat on the ECU connector? It's FREE!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I filled the gas tank and the CEL turned itself shortly thereafter. Coincidence?

He's asking does it test at key pos II prior to start.
Current Volvos:

Well -- confirmation of bad ECM this morning. Had local independent read codes with Volvo scanner and got "Series 900D" fault, which I am told is a bad ECM. I had already acquired a used ECM in anticipation of this news and the ECM removal tool, so I guess next step is to pull the module and get the used one cloned.

Interestingly, my cruise control appears not to work after the scan. Could be pure coincidence, but a used stalk solved that problem a few months back. Perhaps the used stalk has finally failed.
