SWMBO doesn't let me keep a pair on the shelf, although I am reminded to grow a pair on occasion.

Thanks asbcate,

My stock bearing is still rolling at 172K miles.
I have not replaced it yet, but when I do, I will probably install it as factory, i.e., w/o the dust seal b/c if the factory bearing lasts this long, I am not too concerned about dust seal.

On the other hand I can see the pros and cons of this dust seal:
- It can keep water out for a while.
- However, if water ever gets in (driving through deep puddle), it can't get out easily ---> worse than no dust seal. Just curious if people who go into the wild, lakes etc. this feature may or may not be useful.

I think you are drier in NE than we are in NewE. Both of my FWB let go at 150-170k.

I can confirm that a wheel bearing will last much longer with a splash sheild when exposed to water, mud, or salt. They were always recommended for such applications. They are not pressed directly against the bearing, so there is no concern that it will allow it to dry properly.
I would recommend it; especially knowing they made one for this application.

How does the shield attach, I see a pic showing it bolt from the rear, it looks like it is steel. What is the rubber one?

I do not have experience with a splash shield but will +1 on the logic - I can't imagine a splash shield would possibly trap water inside the bearing, seems we can be sure Volvo will have at least considered that much when they designed/recommended it.
