Have a 93 240 Volvo
cluster lightss(abs, srs, low battery, break failure etc) come on when the car is at idle and then the lights go off when I step on the gas, my guess is it most likely needs a different alternator the car also dies and needs to be jumped.

Would I be able to get one off a different model? What years are compatible?

Bosch 80 Amp alternator can be found on 87-93 240, 87-91 740. 94-95 940 just to name a few.

You could also grab a 100A alternator, the smaller Denso (the larger 100A Bosch is a tighter squeeze), from the 940s - it will fit without any modification and give you more room to get the oil filter off when you change the oil. They are always for sale on Turbobricks (see here for one).
