So my 98 V70 has never overheated on me, even in traffic in the summer with the A/C ripping. But recently I got a little startled. I bought an OBD2 reader that links with my phone (using the full version of OBD Fusion). Here's what happened: had been on the freeway for a half hour, engine temp normal, about 5 min after being off the freeway I noticed the app was reading engine temp as like 218 (just below the red), while the engine temp gauge on the dash was still reading as normal. Coolant temp reading in the app was at about 210 when the engine temp spike was noticed.
This kind of thing freaks me out, but I don't know what it could be. Coolant pump works, replaced the thermostat 2 months ago. What else should I check out?
Thanks!

Check out other threads on this topic. There has been a bit of discussion regarding the "feel good" accuracy of the dash indicator at 3 o'clock position vs. actual temp swings. The gauge has a wide range through which it will stay pegged at operating temp. Otherwise people would drive around watching the gauge, not the road.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

On my '97 850 T5, the temperature while idling will eventually rise until the radiator fan turns on.
The temperature when the radiator fan turns on is consistently 103 C = 217.4 F.
Then very rapidly the temp lowers to 92 C = 198 F.
Then it begins to gradually rise till it hits 103 C again.
So it seems to me if your temp is not rising above 218 F while idling, you're probably OK.
If you see it at 220 F, I'd make sure I had the correct 50/50 mix of coolant and water, or just opt for adding an appropriate (relatively small) portion of 100% coolant to see if the 220 F went down closer to 217 F.
