2004 V70 Headlights stay on even if car ignition is off

Post by Bambi-402 »

The only way to shut off my headlights, after I turn the car off, is to pull the fuse. I just keep the fuse out unless I am driving in the dark. The interior indicator lights show that the high beams are on. No matter what I do to the steering wheel headlight stalk, I can't change from high to low. I feel the two must be related. The car also is drawing large amounts of juice when the doors are open for any length of time, causing the battery to need jumping. Immediately before this happened, the wipers went off on their own for 30 minutes, but stopped (not needing any stalk repair). The headlight issue could have started at this time - it was daylight so I did not notice. The dealer wants to start by replacing the stalk $270 ($90 diagnose/$180 repair). Seems like the stalk is not the problem, some relay or switch is the culprit. Hate to waste money. Ideas?

Sounds pretty much like electronics issue. Did the dealer read the codes?

Welcome aboard Bambi-402!

If the stealership did not charge the $90+Tax fee, they most likely did not talk to the car at all.
The control module codes are Volvo proprietary and can be pulled with VIDA/DiCE only (either at a dealership or by an indie shop that's got VIDA).

Have you checked if the High Beam On indicator will go out if you pull out the Hi Beam relay from the fusebox (leave the fuse in for this test). If the indicator stays ON, then the control module looks like the offender.

EDIT:
Sorry, I spoke too soon...
I just noticed that your 'Hi Beam relay' is internal to the CEM; so my test for a stuck relay does not apply here...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Thank you both for replying! They said they ran the codes. He wouldn't provide them to me, after multiple requests. He said there is a communication fault on the turn signal stalk. He said it is a permanent fault and the stalk must be replaced before they can begin to figure this out.

Find another place. Or, better, invest into Chinese clone of DiCE code reader.

There is parameters that shows state of the high beam. You said that dash shows that high beam light is on. So the dealer can be right there is stalk or SWM module is bad.

Or buy some stalk at the junkyard from the same MY car. In this case no programming is needed.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

Thank you for the advice. I can't find a car to pull one from. We tried. I think have the stalk installed and then make a new plan. It would be great if stalk fixed some of the problems. Not feeling very hopeful. Love the car...if it started..
