2001 V70 T5M Incorrect CV Joint on Axle in Car
I have a V70 T5 with a manual transmission that I bought with 160,000 miles on it. it now has 173,000 and I found a small tear in the inner CV boot on the passenger side. It also has a vibration on the highway that doesn't seem to be tire related. I picked up a CV boot kit locally and pulled out the axle thinking I would check it out and see if it was salvageable or if I would be buying a new one. The inner boot had clamps that were the pull tight, bend over and peen down style so it looks like the boot has been replaced before. I undid the clamps and found that the inner joint was a tripod style. All the information I have found regarding CV joints for manual cars indicates that the inner joint is supposed to be the Rzeppa style with balls, not the tripod style. Does that mean that this an aftermarket, Asian replacement one? Also, with the tripod style CV joints how tight do the rollers fit in the grooves? This one had some slop in it. The boot has a small tear but there was plenty of grease in it so it isn't wiped out yet. Not sure if I should tear it down and change out the boot or just buy another axle. I can buy an FEQ locally for $170. They are half that online, but if anything goes wrong or it vibrates from the start I'll be stuck shipping it back and forth on my dime. I know they are mostly crap but for the price it's very tempting. It has a 1 year warranty and I'm driving about 30,000 miles a year so I'll definitely get my money's worth.
Seems that the passenger side axles in manual transmission, front wheel drive cars have a tripod style inner CV joint. The R models with manual transmissions have an Rzeppa CV on the inner end of the passenger side. Going to just clean it up and install a new boot for now.

My 1999 T5M had Rzeppa time on the inner driver side. I did not open the passenger side
