Is This an unusual amount of oil around the turbo?

Post by cvergi01 »

I have a 2000 V70XC. I installed this used TH04HL-16 about 1000 miles ago. The bearings felt tight, with no play so I did not rebuild it, just put it in there. I figured that there was a greater margin of error if I was to try to rebuild it, then if I just went with what I had

The turbo works perfectly, sounds good, and boost climbs and falls just as it should. I was getting ready to replace my vacuum lines and found some seepage around the turbine outlet. I understand that there will be some seepage by design, but I don't recall seeing much around the 155,000 mile turbo I replaced it with.

My question is this: Is this a normal amount of seepage after 1000 miles? Inside the outlet of the turbo it is dry but around the clamps is where I'm seeing it.

It kind of looks like it's coming from the section of rubber hose though, and running back down onto the turbo? The hose looks like it has seen better days, and the darker part of the metal above the rubber seems to indicate that a set of silicone hoses are in order...

Normal.

Twice a year, I spray the areas stained with oil using "Purple Power Cleaner", let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with water.

I don't know about your vacuum hoses - I can barely glimpse one of them in the pics, but I do know that a massive amount of issues with these engines can be prevented by having good, tight and strong hoses all 'round. :)

Do you need a turbo to intercooler hose? I have a bunch, $6 shipped each to your door.

Yes, yes I do need one! I'll send ya a PM.

I just bought this car about 3 months ago? I've been piecing it together bit by bit. I knew the vacuum lines were pretty bad (they even look better in the pictures!), and this was solidified when I went to see lucky, he pulled the wastegate hose off and commented on how "crispy" it was  I just received my 12' of silver silicone vacuum lines from IPD, Going to try to get them installed Wednesday.
