1995 850 Trim colour change advice please.

Hi.
Had the plastic gear knob which was old and cracked - auto transmission.
Purchased a good used one off eBay but its not the correct colour and its leather. Actually I don't know if its real leather or a fake leather but its got the stitching and its real stitching although extremely flat and flush with the surface.

Anyway, we'd like it to be black to match the goiter and console.
I'm hesitant to use a normal spray can black because i think it will probably wear quickly. I know there are special leather paints available but I've not seen them in auto stores and this small project isn't worthwhile paying to take it to a specialist - trimmer, leather maker or otherwise.

Can anyone advice of a cheap DIY reliable method to colour it black please?

SEM makes a dye that holds up better than most but on a shifter knob it likely won't stay looking good for very long.
