1998 S70 motor turns makes winding noise when starting

Post by KHughes][ »

First of all I am a female Volvo owner, so excuse my car lingo. Going down the road hear clicking noise under hood, car starts to lose power and dies. When I raised the hood it was steaming, I'm assuming it ran hot, but temp. gauge was normal. After adding fluid when I tried to start it, it was making a winding noise, but the motor was turning. Someone told me to check timing belt, it was fine. Any suggestions?

What fluid did you add? Water?

Have you checked the engine oil level?

Yes I put water in it. I also checked the oil and it was very low. My last oil change was not more than 2 months ago, either. I also noticed oil on the ground when they were pulling it up on trailer.

Yeah, likely that you developed a bad oil leak from somewhere on the engine which in turn drained out all your oil. The steaming was from the large amount of heat generated by the lack of lubrication.

At least from this end it looks like your engine is close to or completely seized up which in most cases means your looking at a replacement.

:( :x Even if its making a buzzZZ buzzZZ sound when trying to start it? Should the notches on the timing belt be square or rounded off just wondering?

OK, tell us a little more about you and your car. Is it in otherwise good shape? have you owned it a while? Is it a base model, GLT, or T-5? Do you LIKE the car? Are you willing and able to do some of the work on it, or can you afford to pay someone else to? These will let us know which advice to give you.

Good shape. Bought the car July 2015. I think base model. Love the car. Depends on how much work were talking about.
