1999 volvo c70 chip key question

say can anyone tell me if they have got a chipped key made at a local key shop with out the car. instead of paying the big bucks for the dealer to make a key? my local locksmith said he can make a key buy he can't program it. i read somewhere online that the volvo can program it's own keys. has anyone done that? my dealer is 50 miles away that can do that and they want 250.00 for programming they did nost say if that included the key. but even if it did that is a ton of money for a key? thanks

If you have a working key what you can do is extract the chip from it and tape the chip to the antenna ring on the steering column and then use unchipped keys with no problem. What you cannot do is try to use another chipped key along with the chip that is taped to the column.
