2005 xc70 oil pressure light on

Post by von dutchoven »

In another thread I asked about P0026 and P0027 codes on my wife's 2005 xc70 with 89k. I fixed that by cleaning the valve solenoids and putting on new gaskets. The screen on the exhaust gasket looked to be a little clogged. I also did an oil change at the same time. This was this morning. This afternoon I thought I'd do a little shake down cruise to make sure it didn't throw any codes (about 5 miles). All went fine until I was about 2 blocks from my house. I turned right and the oil pressure light flickered. It happened so fast I wasn't even sure it was the oil light. I went up the hill at the end of my block going to my house and at the top the oil light went on. I turned off the engine and coasted to my driveway. I though maybe I didn't seal the oil filter and just pumped all the oil out but there was no leak and the engine had plenty of oil. I put Mobil 1 5w-30 in it like usual.
Any ideas?

Maybe some oil sludge from the solenoids went into the pick-up pipe mesh at the bottom of the oil pan. If that's the case, looks like it needs an oil pan removal. I'm not sure if this works, but I will try on mine to clean the pick up mesh through the oil drain hole with a brush like this (not sure how safe it is, though)

Yesterday I let it idle for about 10 minutes, turned it off and then checked the oil right away and there were bubbles on the dip stick. I had read this indicates that the o-rings are bad. I should say now that at no time did the oil pressure light and warning come on during this. So I decided to remove the oil pan and see if the pickup is clogged and clean it. I put about a quarter of a can of seafoam in the crankcase and let it idle for another 10 minutes and then drained the oil. The oil was a little dirtier coming out than when it went in but not filthy. So today when I got home from work I took the oil pan off. I wouldn't call it sludge but there is some gritty debris in there and every thing is a nice coppery color. The pickup had some stuff in it but it certainly wasn't clogged. I guess it could have sucked up some stuff that fell off when I stopped the car. The o-rings are still soft so I don't think they are bad. I guess the PO didn't change the oil much. I'm going to clean everything up the best I can button it back up and change the oil every two thousand miles for a couple of times. Maybe I'll install a pressure gauge too.

There is also this post from someone with the oil pressure light

"After going through all the recommended bits like oil pressure switch incl. wiring, cleaning oil sump, replacing o-rings I replaced the valve which is placed on top of the oil filter housing (oil sump side) and the issue was gone! If the valve stays open due to slush oil flows from the filter housing back into the oil sump."
