98 V70 Timing Belt Change

Hey guys, thanks for any input.
I do a lot, but I am not going to tackle this one.
I have 140,000, time for a new belt.
What should I expect to pay to get it changed? Tensioner, belt, the works...to make sure it is done right.

If you have the mechanical tensioner it has to be replaced. The water pump, hydraulic tensioner (if that's what you have) and idler roller and idler pulley are optional depending on how lucky you feel. My 98 S70 has the original water pump and idler with 202K miles on the clock. Both will get replaced in a few thousand more miles.

Here's a link to the parts. You can read the engine SN off the belt cover and go to the web site below and it'll tell you which tensioner you have. Add up the parts cost and figure 3-4 hours labor, depending on how many parts you replace. Figure an indy at about $75/hour and a dealer at $100.

I feared this job, but once I got started it wasn't as difficult as it was made out to be. I did not even need the special tools that "they" said was required.

If you have 4 hours and a spare vehicle just in case it takes you longer you can do this. Here is a link I found helpful: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/timingbelt.htm

I understand sometimes it's cheaper to pay someone when you do not have the time. Time is usually money these days.

I like the site to do it myself, but I have a month to go on school, and...busy time. I also am at 140,000 so I don't want to push it.

The belts are not designed to break at exactly 70k. I ran an independent Volvo repair shop for 8 years and have seen many 240's still running way over the recommended change interval. They usually broke at about double the recommended interval for people that drove gently (low RPM). At the dealers about half the cars come in 1 to 3 months late.
