2003 V70 does new clutch mean new fly wheel?

Post by Cillian »

Hi,

First time post, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum,

My v70 2.0 turbo petrol, 2003 needs a new clutch and one mechanic has told me fly wheel needs replacing at same time, even if existing fly wheel is ok (otherwise the car will shake quite badly) so cost is high (€1400) while another mechanic says fly wheel is probably fine and just replace clutch for €700-800. I trust both but couple of questions:

- which is correct? do I create another problem if fly wheel not replaced?
- is it worth it, perhaps better replacing the car, finding a €2,000 v70 without these problems (take that risk)

Any advice much appreciated,

Cillian

It is a dual mass flywheel that has a pair of coil springs and a bearing connecting the clutch part of flywheel to the crankshaft carried plate with starter ring gear. The springs weaken and the bearing can fail but there is no assurance this has happened but also no way to predict if it will be near of service life for the bearing or springs. If it has no rattles whilst idling fully warmed up with clutch pedal released, gearbox in neutral sitting still that go away when clutch pedal is depressed and gearbox is placed in any gear then it is likely OK now. If the milage on car is very high percentage highway then the chance of failure is low.

Is the failure that the clutch slips or is it low or soft pedal with hard to engage gears?

Is it the typical issue with the slave cylinder ? How many miles on the car? I don't see reasons to replace the flywheel if it looks fine and the mileage isn't too high. With higher miles and mostly city as mentioned the springs can get weaker. Replace the bearing as well. Check out also some european forums where manual transmissions are more often discussed
