1997 854 - cold start sound with no bass

1997 854 - cold start sound with no bass

The morning cold start has a flat sound with no bass. Like stereo is off or flat like AM radio.

It lasts few seconds and then bass is added. One cold morning during the engine warm up the "flat sound" was cycling in and out.

Clueless - first noticed it the morning after the oil and filter change -- Mann filter Pennzoil 5W30. Oil level is just below max marker.

Engine starts without hesitation, but determined to avoid any extreme cold weather morning surprise.

Please rename and re-explain.
"No bass" makes no sense to me (and I'm sure others)

If I understand correct, it sounds like you are describing low compression on start, not enough to "lawnmower" but enough to sound odd. How cold is it? Maybe the temp is affecting fuel atomization until compression makes a little heat?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I am amused.

It is close to 30F around 6:30am.
Lawnmover sound is close, but only for few seconds.

Your comments tell me you know the distinct 850 engine sound. I know it too for listening to it each morning for 20 years.
It wasn't usual. I will listen again and post back.
