Re: Bosch throttle body questions

Post by autoperdu »

Have started the de-sludging process, used 6oz seafoam in crankcase, idled 30 min. then changed from 10w30 down to 5w30 car is now initially idling much smoother returning to rough about 2-3 min. later. Have decided to replace oil at 1000 miles and de-sludge again at that time. Am wondering if I really need new motor mounts if I get the whole pcv thing under control. Also should I go to an even lighter oil, say 0w30 once I have cleaned/corrected pcv? Am planning on checking/cleaning ptc before ordering parts for pcv.
Also replaced blower and resistor and am wondering how in the heck they got their hands back there for those screws. Borrowed a little 1/4" pass through ratchet and used my torx 25 bit, my slow aquisition of tools is paying off the more I work on cars! Must say the filter I pulled out was a mess, more black than white and received a whole bunch of "presents" from mother nature (detritus from surrounding trees and possibly former owner's surroundings). Replaced with a tyc unit and seems to be working fine.

0w, 5w, 10w are all the same "weight" except at below freezing temps. The 30 is what actually matters, so you have not used a lighter oil and there is no reason to worry about using "lighter or heavier" oil.

The short interval oil changes are a good idea. Go ahead and Seafoam again right before your next oil change if you want to. Then continue with the 1000 mile oil changes until you are satisfied that the sludge has been mostly removed. The best oils for desludging are high detergent and/or high polarity oils (ester oil base stocks are better than anything). On the cheap end of the high detergent oils are the heavy duty diesel oils. You can get them in 30-weight like Rotella 10w30, it's a synth blend. This is what I would suggest. After a couple short oil change intervals with that stuff then maybe move on to regular 5000 mile changes on a high quality synthetic with an ester base like Redline or Motul.

you can get the front and side motor mounts fairly cheap and they're not hard to replace. The PCV is a bit of a bear, and if you have to replace many of the parts they will add up to $$. To truly clean the throttle body you will want to pull it off and clean it by hand, no amount of spray will truly clean it while it's attached to the car.
