Here's the story.
I love to take care of my car. As I drive, work on, sit in, and really just hang out with my car I think of little ways I can make her feel pretty...To feel a little...Special to me. So I usually get home and sit next to the ol lady, trolling the internet to find nice things for her. I end up adding bits and pieces to my shopping cart with IPD and when I have $149 in the cart, I pay for the order and get a whole bunch of nic nacs for the car!
I've got about $30 to go after some small additions today (thanks to the new leaking oil cap seal thread) When I get to the $30 area, I start to think of something I WANT to get for her to make her feel more special to ME.
Here is the list so far:
Fuel Filter
Gear Selector Indication Bulb
Multi Purpose "Bone" Tool
Headlamp Wiper Blade Set
Turbo Drain Pipe Seal Kit
Billet Aluminum Engine Oil Cap
ipd HD Viton Oil Cap Seal
So with this $30 to go I was just going to add an upper polyurethane engine bushing on there and be done with it. I've put on some good performance bits and the engine is moving around a little more than she used to. A poly bushing would certainly help with that! But then I got to thinking.
Would it help too much? Don't I want the engine to absorb some of that momentum instead of the transmission, driveline, and transaxle soaking it up? If energy never dies, where is the energy that I'd roadblock be going? If I want this car to last me another 400K miles, shouldn't I want everything bouncing around softly?
Thanks for listening!

2000 V70 XC is a poly upper mount really a good idea?

If you are talking about the top torque bush, then there are 2 schools of thought on this. Those (like me) who prefer the original rubber version, and those who are happy with the poly bushes.
The + appears to be less movement of the engine and some say a better response.
The - is that some say they fell the car transmits much more vibration through out, especially through the steering wheel.
This is a personal choice.
Neil.

I bought the upper and lower poly mount replacements for my car. 2 months later, I replaced all both poly mounts to Volvo OEM mounts. I can't stand the constant vibration in idle and drive. While it is a personal preference, if you have a wife that drive that car, don't do poly bushings.

Here's my thoughts on the poly upper engine mount bushings...
It's an easy install, and it makes your motor look cool when the hoods open. BUT, if you JUST install that one poly bushing, you stress all the other old, worn rubber bushings. The "right" way to go about this is to replace ALL of your motor mounts, especially the ones you can't see. The front & rear have turned into marshmallows on these 15 to 20 year old cars. Yes, they're an pain to change, but once you have a full set of new mounts, you will find little need for a colorful upper torque mount and a new factory mount will isolate you and your dashboard from unnecessary vibration

^ What they all said.
I tried one because it was an easy install and summarily replaced it with an OE because of the vibration.

One of my favorite parts of the Volvo is how smooth it is. I really don't want to destroy the pleasure of driving it. Are there any kits for replacing all of the bushings? Are the non OEM ones good enough? There is a substantial difference in price...

Your car is 15-16 years old, and the bushes have lasted this long. Yes the Volvo ones are more expensive, but like you say, the driving experience is what you are looking for. Some of the bushes are made by others. If you have the 4 bolt top bush for example, that I believe is made by Hutchison.
The lower torque bush is no longer available I understand from Volvo. The others 3 (?) are and are long lasting.

In engine mounts, you do really get what you paid for. Do you want to do this in a year again? If not, get Volvo or from companies that makes parts for Volvo.cvergi01 wrote:One of my favorite parts of the Volvo is how smooth it is. I really don't want to destroy the pleasure of driving it. Cheap mounts might look the same, fit the same (most of the time), work the same (most of the time), but they certainly doesn't last the same, does not offer the same ride quality, and usually made in China vs Poland, Germany, France, etc...

1. The upper mount is made by Lemforder.
So get the Lemforder for $12 or so @rmeuropean dot com.
Note the orientation before installing new mount.
The idea is to allow the engine to rock fore and aft inside the mount.
Removing and installing the Lemforder (or Volvo OEM) mount is hard. It is a tight fit that requires wheel bearing tools etc.
2. The lower trans mount (torque mount)...use Hutchinson.
3. The Right-hand side mount.
Use Lemforder.
