99 S70 AWD Turbo Problem?

Post by dang5002 »

I just had the transmission and transfer case rebuilt. So, my wife came home and said the ETS light was on but no CEL. Also, the Service light was on. I reset the service light then ran for codes. A P1238 code came up. I erased the code and the ETS light went out and hasn't come back on. Now the car is making a "roaring" noise when I accelerate. Sounds kind of like an exhaust manifold leak. It only does it intermittently, though. Car still drives fine just loud as hell at times. Could it be the turbo control valve P1238 or maybe the wastegate sticking? Comments appreciated.

Check for a loose or broken vacuum line between the TCV and the turbo. Swapping out a transmission is a fairly major ordeal and things can get snagged.

The loud exhaust could be a bigger deal though. The flange at the top of the downpipe where it bolts up to the turbo is a known weak link and the flange itself can easily crack away from the pipe if it is stressed. Shifting the engine around to get a transmission in and out can easily stress that joint.

The flange is pretty easy to spot if you remove the heat shield around the turbo.

P1238 is set when you are under high revs, 3500 I think, and the ECU detects either low air flow or low boost pressure in the manifold. On a 1999 the boost pressure is measured directly

Either a loose vacuum hose or cracked manifold can cause this. Don't sweat the ETS light until you fix that boost problem..it's common for induction problems to give a host of codes.
