How did you get it into second to get the car rolling?

Quality of the slave/master cylinders is important.
Big names are Sachs, FTE.

Anything else is a gamble.

Slipped it into second by using the pedal -- so I may have been getting some clutch, but it seemed to resist very little simply being slipped into second, whereas getting it into first seemed like so much more work. I started from a full stop in second gear several times.

Upshifts are easy, just let off the accelerator and mash it into the next gear. It will go fairly easily and it won't grind if you are decisive. Downshifts are much tougher since you need to go to neutral and then try to match the revs before it will slide into the next lower gear.

On my '94 there is no starter interlock so when I got to a stop light without the clutch I would just chug until it died and then go to first gear and then start it in first when the light turned green. I made a 200 mile or so trip home that way but I did get very deliberate about choosing my route to have the least number of stops.

You can skip, down shifts by just slipping into neutral. Third gear is the magic one on my T5, you can almost drive the whole town cycle in 3rd

Haha,

This reminds of my 1978 Honda Civic with stick shift back oin the 1980s...
Clutch went out, my brother had to push the car from a standstill (red light) to gain some momentum, once the car had some 5mph, you can shift into 1st, then keep going up.
The synchros were so worn that I could shift w/o using the clutch.
It was a fun experience driving home w/o the clutch!

my clutch hydraulics went on 2 days after xmas, after pushing the car off the road I realised I could use the starter in first to get moving again, luckily I found a garage that was open and repaired the incorrect sized copper washer another mechanic installed on the slave to hose line.

Wow Daryl, that sounds like the kind of honest mechanic that's hard to find nowadays. Thanks for sharing that!
