Failing ETM?

Post by CigarDaddyBear »

Howdy from Austin TX,

This is my first time owning a Volvo and so far just the short time I have owned my 2002 S60 I have enjoyed it greatly. I am talking almost full conversion to a Volvo person but I am having an issue that may or may not be related to the ETM so I figured I would post it here as a start and go from there.

The issue started out almost randomly but when I would make a right turn if I did not accelerate into the turn the engine would stall so I would have to pull over and restart the car. After the restart the car would drive like a charm. This did not happen all the time but it has now evolved into any turn, left or right. The RPM's will drop from around 900 to under 100 and then she stalls. It has also developed a drop in engine power when not accelerating but has not stalled from this yet.

I have changed the MAS and had the ETM cleaned but it did not help. I have also checked all the vacuum lines that I can physically get to as well as had the fuel filter replaced and nothing. The closest I have gotten to resolving this was changing the MAS. That seemed to correct the issue for a short time.

Unfortunately the only place that can pull a code from the computer when I am available due to work hours is AutoZone and they pulled a generic p code of 1905 from their meter but I was told that it could really anything because that was just a generic code and offered no further info so here I am lol.

Based on the information does this even sound like a ETM issue?

Well I guess no one knows. 217 views and no assistance. Oh well I will just replace it and see. It can't hurt anything but I just find it weird that no one has had these symptoms with a failing ETM.

Oh well.

Ill bump this one into the P80 forum where there is more traffic to see if anyone has these symptoms.

P1905 is a pressure control solenoid fault according to Google - thats unconfirmed.

If it's a 2002 MY S60 turbo it won't even have an ETM made by Magnetti. They were phased out on turbos at the end of 2001. It will have a Bosch ETA throttle which have proved very reliable. Without codes to help with diagnosis you are literally guessing and throwing money and parts/time at it for no reason.

Either get a Vida/Dice setup and DIY it or take it to a Volvo indie repairer who will have a scanner that can easily delve into the car's complexities.
