1999 V70R won't stay running after rebuilt ETM

Post by timo98 »

Hello,
Our '99 R was exhibiting signs of the ETM failing. Ran great and then would spontaneously cut out and then back in again with different throttle position. Sent unit to Xemodex for rebuild. Upon reinstallation, the car ran great for about 7 miles and then similar symptoms returned except now it never 'runs great'….always stumble and will barely drive.

Have:
1.) installed rebuilt etm
2.) new maf
3.) new engine mgt relay
4.) new coils and plugs
5.) noid test shows all injectors pulsing when running
6.) compression tested good
7.) fuel pressure at rail tested good

Car starts and seems to run smoothly for a little bit before it begins erratic idle and then stalls. Can rev it up to 4k rpm but if I try to drive, it can't sustain running with any load.

No check engine light….

Any thoughts?

Is the bulb in the check engine light burnt out?

2.) new maf ---------------oem, aftermarket?
Last time both my 98 and the 99 with ETM issue had similar problem it turned out to be the MAF. The 98 would cut out while sitting on a red light, drive as if it was on 3 cylinders and popped the maf code 2 hours after. I then unplugged it and drove 2600 miles without a hick up. I wouldn't do it on the 99 though as it is way too electronically sensitive. 98 feels more mechanical.

Update:
Pulled MAF plug and runs just as poorly
Check engine light isn't burned out. Lights on key on.
Still not lit when running but pulled codes and have rear O2 code we've had forever

Will recheck IC hose connections. Wondering about the CAT.....

Look for gross vacuum leaks, although it SHOULD throw a code...? I'd start at the intake piping of the ETM

If it runs the same with the MAF unplugged, then I would suspect MAF in addition to vacuum leak.

But if you unplug the MAF, how can it NOT throw a code?

It always throws a code with the MAF unplugged, or at least mine does each time I forget to plug it back in to the socket. It sounds like a vacuum leak. Have you looked under the intake, and all those little elbows? They don't show holes, but sometimes will show cracks, or fall apart when you try to examine them. We had the same thing on the 1997 and the 1995. Ending up buying a bunch of elbows, and ran all new hoses.

Did you replace the spark plug wires? Mine did that until wires were replaced. Anytime load was applied it would barely run but idled OK, started when weather turned cold and wet Use Volvo wires if you need to replace.
