Sorry to keep bugging you gents, but here's another question...

If my V70 sets overnight (or longer) I have to crank it for a LONG time to get it to start (30-60 seconds). Sounds like it wants to catch, but doesn't. If it has only been setting for minutes to hours, it will fire right up.

My fuel rail pressure is 50+ psi.

Anyone have experience in this and/or want to take a shot at the most likely culprits?

You need to fix that , Jeff, or you will burn out your starter.

Check the ECT yo see if the resistance is right for ambient temperature. I'll try to find the table. I'm guessing you aren't getting cold start injection.

Thank you for the info!

Is it possible for the ECT to be giving the proper reading on the temp gauge, but still be malfunctioning regarding cold start injection?

Yes. The gauge is very nonlinear so it won't show many errors

Volvo only on that part if it needs replacing, btw. Many problems with aftermarket on the P80s

Very helpful, thank you - even though I don't really want to spend $50 on a stinking ECT Sensor! :D

The other thing that has crossed my mind is one or more of the injectors getting kind of sloppy. I suspect that as a possibility, because at idle the car runs just a little rough, and the mileage isn't what it should be.

I'm moving slowly on this car, so I might not get to it right away, but I'll come back and "finish" this discussion when I do.

Gotta bump this one guys...

I have the new OEM coolant temp sensor in the car. Doing that really made no difference.

When the car is warm it fires right up.
When it's cold it has problem - sometimes it's really hard to start. When it's hard to start, after I finally get it fired up it usually smells like raw gas - like it has been flooded. It acts flooded as well, usually taking several seconds of running to get it firing on all cylinders.

Now... This car sat for over a year before I worked on it.

1. Is it possible that this could be an injector problem?
2. Is it possible that old/bad gas gummed up one or more of my injectors?
3. With 205,000 miles, is it possible, or likely, that my injectors aren't working properly - slobbering gas instead of spraying it?
4. Is there a place any of you would recommend sending the injectors to get them cleaned or rebuilt?

Thoughts?

There are Ebay services that will test and clean injectors for around $20 a piece. When an old engine sits for a while, the injectors can indeed benefit from an ultrasonic bath cleaning even if the filter baskets look clean. The other thing that can happen is piston rings getting stuck because of gunk build up.

Gas smell when trying to start up makes me think the injectors are spraying well gasoline which is accumulating inside the cylinders.

Does a battery boost help the engine fire up quicker? Maybe the battery got weak or a ground/power cable is corroded. I would also try to remove a spark plugs after giving it a few cranks, see if they are wet with coolant/oil

For what it's worth, when trying to start the car cold, it will turn over and act like it WANTS to start, but can't - kind of like the old old diesels used to do. It's like it's hitting on 2 or 3 cylinders and just can't quite get enough power to take off and run on its own.
