S60 2001 Trans problem?

Post by RacingR »

Hi Guys, posting on behalf of a client of mine, ... copy and paste from another non volvo specific forum, edited for language too :)

"Have a mate who has a 2001 S60 Volvo (not sure what engine - sorry I know thats not being the most helpful)... called me yesterday saying the transmission has **** itself.

Put it in gear, can feel it "kick" into gear but put foot down and it goes nowhere. put foot further down and it stutters and crawls and hops, ... just enough for him to park it onto a median strip and call a flatbed. He didnt think to try L, 2, 3, Rev etc before the truck collected it.

Got it towed to a Volvo specialist, .... and old mate has told him trans is ******. $2800 installed for a second hand trans of the same year (2001 appears to be a timebomb gearbox for the S60 .. Runs an Aisin?). I asked him to ask the Mechanic to tell him what codes it logged, and was advised no codes?

Now these Euro cars, will log everything, (I have a 740iL and A8, 97 models and they tell me everything thats wrong) ... so I find it hard to believe that not 1 fault was logged about the trans? Discussing with another mate, we were thinking something fluid/pressure/converter related?

I just dont want my mate to be taken for a ride for something that MAY not be required, and find it strange that apparently no logged error codes?

I know nothing about Aisin auto's or Volvo's, ... apart from setting it alight, suggestions? opinions?"

Have seen lots about ETM's? .. but mainly talks about hunting, and cruising speed issues, not taking off? but still could be something to look at?

The 2001 transmissions are troublesome but I agree the no codes is hard to swallow. I think this was the last year for the bad MM ETM, but again, if the ETS light is off on the dash, it is probably ok.

There is a whole sub Forum on ETMs below

Yer I know there is whole subforum, thats how I managed to find this place :)

While I know its possible for the trans to die without throwing codes, but I would have thought that there would have been something monitoring line pressure or similar?

I just have this feeling the mechanic is taking the easy way (and more $$ in his pocket) but saying we have to install a new trans.

Is there certain things to check if I go out to the workshop? eg. car in neutral and see how it revs, try reverse, try 3rd gear etc?
