850 gear selector cable removal

Post by cohomology »

Hi you all,

I am (slowly) moving forward with my '93 850 engine swap project. Here I got some trouble, how am I supposed to remove the gear selector cable mount from the tranny wall? The two bolts holding the mount are right below the cable and there is not enough clearance to use a socket. I suspect one needs to remove the cable first and find that Haynes says one needs to remove the retaining clip to remove the cable. Haynes does not give any details on how to remove the retaining clip though. I tried to pry it with a screw driver but was afraid sth might get broken if I abused it.

I am borrowing dooby's picture. Mind you, this is a stick shift and I am talking about the vertical retaining clip back on the cable mount, not the level circlip holding the end of the cable to the gear selector lever. Please help!!

Undo number 1 clip first, move the end off the rod, then use pry bar/pilers to pull up number 2 clip.

Though, I'm not sure why you are wanting to remove it. I didn't touch it when I removed the transmission, I also didn't touch it when installed the transmission.

So just pry # 2 clip relentlessly?

I dont see how it is possible to remove the tranny with the cable attached? May be you detached the other end in center console??

Pry, hammer, pick, twist, pull, etc whatever method that don't destroy things.
Cables need to be removed from the transmission. Cable mount doesn't need to be removed.

yeah I see what you mean. I will leave the other end of the cable in and just detach the cable from the mount.
