ABS Light, then gas guage, at times tachometer dancing tween 750-1500

Post by NSWolf »

1998 VOLVO S90 AKA 960 in California December 10, 2015

ABS Light goes on intermittently, as the problem progressed it would be while driving and now it is while starting the car. At one point, the gas guage went out, (still got 100 miles worth of gas in the tank), and at the same times tachometer dancing tween 750-1500. Incidentally, the gas gauge went to zero (not below zero as when the ignition and key is off and the red warning light for low fuel did not come on). Made a left turn while driving, and all went back to normal.

ABS light went out
Gas registered,
tach settled to normal.
and incidentally the right turning signal (blinkING twice as fast as normal), that went back to normal also.

Checked all fuses at all 3 compartments, except for the relays. Have not checked the speed sensors at front or rear. (is there two in the front?) at the wheel, and is the rear at the differential? Planning to get under there and clean em.
Interesting to me is that all these issues appeared simultaneously. At times the rapid right turning signal does blink rapid without any of the other problems.

That is the main issue I've been having this past week. I have about 120k miles. Please advice.....

And if there is anyone ambitious enough, this problem (since 2006 - used car purchased at approx 80k miles)has happened one out of 5 times after driving for 2-3 hours, or hilly terrain...

...my car begins to shift gears rapidly (is this a safety mode to get home or) and any thoughts on this completely separate issue. Already replaced the winter eco and sport switch, that did not help. Just read somewhere to take off the speed sensor at transmission and clean, disconect tcm (trans. ctrl module) and reconect. Have not done that.

Thank you for reading and ahead of time should you have time to respond.

I know nothing, but see if a ABS code exists...if not, then you have an electrical issue with instrument panel, or circuits to it.

"ABS light went out
Gas registered,
tach settled to normal."

I don't have schematics for your vehicle, but the ignition key may supply 12-volt power to ABS light; on a 1994 940 Volvo, this would be BL-R wire
