1998 S70 Cold Weather -> AT-124 Code and CE Light

Post by ferocity02 »

Today was our coldest morning yet, around 35F (California). Went to start the S70 this morning and I got an AT-124 code (transmission mode selector low signal), flashing up arrow, and check engine light. The car drives fine. I cleared the codes and it didn't come back in a few miles.

About 2 months ago I cleaned out the range switch because reverse lights weren't working. I put a lot of dielectric grease in it, which I found out afterwards that I only should have used a little bit. Regardless, it has worked fine until now.

I'm curious if the cold weather combined with too much grease resulted in a bad connection inside the range switch.

Anyone else had a similar issue?

The car is a 1998 S70 GLT with 187K miles.

I doubt that grease is the culprit.Grease will not apsorb water or condensation and it's not conductive. It's there to prevent corrosion and to provide a good contact.
I don't see how too much of grease can make a problem.

It was equally as cold this morning and it did not happen.

I'm going to consider it a fluke until it happens again. If it does, I'll report back.

Don't read too much into the weather being cold either - these cars are made for cold weather. My 850s have usually been living in around 5F temps during the winter, and never had an issue arise from that. :)
