I could hear the fuel pump run and it started right up with a jump. Runs fine
but the check engine and service engine lights were on. Warmed it up, stopped
for premium gas wound it out a bit and only the check engine light is on now.
Was there a code for bad fuel pump that had to clear most likely?

The ABS light was on a few times but now it is off. They said that this was
happening before the fuel pump problem started. I'll search the forum and
start a new thread about it if needed.
Edit: and the Trac Off light was also on along with the ABS light.

Thanks! That seems to be exactly what we need for the ABS module.

It is odd that a 5/16" barb coupler fits 1/4" auto parts store fuel line perfectly,
not sure about factory fuel line.
On closer inspection of the piece that I cut off it seems that it was
probably impossible for the 5/16" barb to have gone inside the thick
inner plastic based on what I can see it just looks too small. Perhaps that
was heat shrunk so that it is smaller than the fresh section that I pushed
the new barb into.
I have a feeling that what they sell as a 1/4" brass barb is what will fit the
factory fuel line. I'll know better when the replacement quick connector comes
in from ebay, I can compare that barbed end to what I bought. If it is in
good shape I'll see if I can use it and replace this temp fix.

Does anyone know for sure if the factory fuel line is actually heat shrink tubing?

I took it to an Auto parts place that read out the codes. The battery didn't have
much charge and the head lights were on when he turned the key. The reader
displayed communicating for about 3 to 5 minutes, then I noticed that the dash
lights were dimming as the battery ran down. The reader had trouble communicating
then finally when the battery was almost dead it read a MAF error. I don't think
this can be trusted with the battery so low, or is it a common problem?
I had to jump it to start the car it was so low.

Charge battery, erase codes, drive, read codes, if any

You definitely cannot trust codes that come up with weak batteries

We have an option to buy an 2004 s60 at a very good price.
Does much of what we've learned with this car apply, are the
engines or anything else similar?

The quick connector end is here from ebay. The barb on it looks smaller than the
brass one, but it does measure .31" which is the same as the parts that fit the 1/4"
line and this confirms that the 5/16" barb should fit the factory line.
I'll probably put in this right angle quick connector as soon as I have some free time
since it should fit the 1/4" line and prevent any chance of a kink.

Mystery about he 5/16" barb solved, went to put away the left over parts and the 5/16"
barb was in the bag so what I _thought_ was a 5/16" was actually 1/4" barb. All makes
sense now, original line was 1/4", everything fit with 1/4" parts.
Also the 1/4" barb measures about .31" on the high points of the barb which makes sense
since it has to be a tight fit. The factory quick connect also measures the same on the
high points.

Thanks for everyone's help here. Sending out the ABS module today.
