98 V70 PCV system routine maintenance
About a year ago I completely modded the PCV system on my car as recommended here. I glove tested it just before Christmas and its still going strong. While I was doing the mod I kept having a persistent thought that some sort of routine maintenance might keep me from having to repeat it. Does anyone know what the routine maintenance should be? I think my owners manual says to do it every 60000 miles but doesn't go into what to do.

Actually just throw away the flame trap, that will help cut down on clogging and accumulated gunk.

I was going to mention this, too... I don't think the N/A necessarily NEEDS a flame trap.erikv11 wrote:Actually just throw away the flame trap, that will help cut down on clogging and accumulated gunk.

As I mentioned, I did the modification a year ago. I threw away the flame trap since it appears to do nothing useful. The only thing I have done since is to replace the plastic elbow on the intake side right where the flame trap is. The new part cost me $4.95 and the old one leaked badly. The new one fights very tightly. I threw away (recycled) the new flame trap also.
That said the thread was about routine maintenance. When I took the old oil trap off it was filled with gunk and goo. The lines coming off of it near the bottom were also partially clogged. So, routine maintenance would be aimed at keeping that from recurring. I'm thinking maybe some seafoam (like a third of a can) dumped into the hose that would take it there...don't know. This modification was too labor intensive to repeat every few years.
I believe volvo's intent was/is to routinely replace these parts and I'd like to avoid that.

To my understanding, what is really clogging the PCV faster is short trips on cold engine. Very frequent oil change doesn't seem to help, while a good synthetic oil might help slowing down the gunk build up.

I have about 115,000 miles on my current PCV system. I believe good full synthetic oil will help more than anything else. I change my oil about every 8,000 miles. I'm sure you could get away with every 10,000 (as the owners manual recommends).
I'm pretty sure the manual says "service if needed".
