Oil in coolant, sludge in coolant res. moist exhaust.

Post by Rick Almeida »

1995 850 T-5R

My car seems to be running strong. But put youre hand in front of the tail pipe and it will be wet before long.
My coolant res has globs of yellowish white sludge in it and the coolant itself is brown. Please check out my pics and vids.

Please let me know what my next move is. Can I drive it without hurting anything?

What's the history on the car? New to you? Has coolant ever been changed? Has oil been change recently? Does car overheat?
All signs points to blown headgasket or crack radiator/oil cooler.

But, there is a slim chance of this is a new to you car, coolant was never changed and the car was driven in short trips and never had enough time to burn out all the moist inside its oil.

Another possibility besides, the items already mention is the Turbo. The turbo is oil and water cooled, may be they are mixing.

Your radiator has 2 coolers one for the trans driver side, the other for the turbo passenger side. The plastic tanks tent to fail or split open after 5-6 years.

Check the trans fluid level for any antifreeze, checking the cooler for turbo is more diificult.

- This is mayo created by very short trips.
Go for a long trip on highway >30 min and see what happens to the mayo.

- When in doubt, do a compression test, dry and wet.

I had similar problem with my S70. Needed new radiator. The oil cooler had cracked internally, oil passed into the cooling system within the radiator. Is your 850 a turbocharged model? I believe Turbo models have oil coolers integrated into the radiator on the passenger side. Normally aspirated models do not.

Hey Guys
Thanks for all the great feedback. The car is new to me, I got it 04/15. it's a fixer upper. New shocks, struts, fuel relay, brakes all around,
wheel bearing and cv joint drivers side, tires and Enkei rims, headliner, VSS, PNP, O2 sensor front and back, oil change, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, air cleaner, ignition switch.... Its coming together. There have been a lot of days scratching my head wondering will I ever feel confident enough to take the 850 for a long ride, i've had so many problems along the way. I was setting up to flush the coolant system when I found this problem. It runs strong. So much fun to drive. It's time for a long ride.

That's bad mayo in the coolant. Change coolant immediately and see how fast it comes back.

Cracked cooler in radiator
Head gasket
Cracked turbo

Are the possibilities , in rough decreasing order or probability

As abscate pointed out: Change the oil and the coolant and flush the system now. With this much mayo, the radiator is inefficient and you will eventually overheat her = $$$
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
