Thank you 93Regina, for your knowledge and advice. You have such a wealth of information and I thank you for sharing it with me and others who may have been through something similar. I guess the reason why I purchased the 951 was because it had the 561 ecu installed when I bought the car. I thought I remembered reading somewhere about volvo putting EGR in some cars, but not making it fully functional. There were some intentionally blank female connectors when I plugged it into the newer ecu. I should have taken a picture. Also, it didn't have an air pump, so I didn't believe it would be a California model.

The engine does have stamped B230 FD on the timing belt cover to further confuse a noob like me. In hindsight, I probably should have purchased the 954, but I didn't want to be stuck with an ecu that didn't fit. Perhaps I am reading too much into the chart on Bill's page. I dunno.

Do I need to get a different ecu (like the 954 model) to pass emissions tests, even if the check engine light isn't illuminated? From what I understand it looks like this would be the worst case scenario. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Andy

FD - essentially a B230F fitted with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Pulse air system for cleaner emissions.

I know by 1994, the B230FD engine was used on 940s...but on your 1990 240, I wonder if the FD was in production.

So, is there a pulsed air system on this vehicle? What state do you live in?

Hi 93 Regina, I live in Georgia, but the previous owner brought the car down from the state of Illinois, which would explain the need for a cold start injector.

From looking under the hood, I did not see any pulse air components, nor an air pump. This was partially the reason why I was struggling with trying to find a computer that would work with the car.

Knowing also that the previous owner liked to tinker and not always do things by the book, further confused me more on the correct ECU to purchase.

By taking a chance with the 951 ECU, I will say that the engine is running much better now, and hopefully won't spit out any check engine codes in the near future.

A cold start injector may not be needed there...years ago, I manually controlled this injector via momentary switch.

I rather suspect OEM engine was replaced....but if vehicle needs an emission test, it would be based upon OEM engine specs, most likely.

Current engine/ECU may pass emission testing OK...

Could someone have simply replaced the timing belt cover? Did you check for other signs the engine had been replaced?
