how much power do i want this car to make?

It's been ten years now, this is my 3rd 850, 2ND turbo, 1St R !!! So now that I have the one I wanted. My question is how far to go on building the engine. And how much is too much power, I want it to make 350 bhp minimum, but is this asking too much of a 20 year old bottom end Advice anyone?

350 hp isn't too much to ask for, but you will definitely want to do a stage zero before anything else. A tune would also be a good idea.

Many years ago when I was living in Scotland, there was a guy who had an 850 modified by TWR (who ran the racing Volvo 850's). They had his car pumping out near 500 bhp.

I have just been in contact with a guy in Edmonton in Canada (up the road from me) that is needing help with his car that is putting out a claimed 350 horsepower at the wheels!

Maybe worth talking to Lucky at ARD and see if he can suggest how to get there without braking the wallet too much!

Also, according to Volvo, the automatic transmissions on these handle 300 hp safely, so if yours is an auto, consider swapping for a manual tranny if you want to go above the 300 mark.

Fast and reliable, no shortcuts or sub par parts will be used on the build. I don't have tons of money, but the car is not my daily driver, so I'm going to take my time and do it right... Or try!! I have considered a manual swap, but want to retain all factory fit and finish, so this is far down the road. Now I'm focusing on proper boost pressure and stage 0

Ipd ecu flash (sent to Oregon for Christ sake) swapped from my 95 turbo,
Msd ignition coil
New plugs, iridium, wires cap and rotor.
Ipd HD cbv with blue spring15?LBS
Ipdv HD tcv.
All new vacuum lines between turbo, tcv,cbv and vacuum tree
Poly upper engine mount ipd
Ipd hd end links
Super cool muffler tape!!!

This is correct, so unless you want to be swapping transmissions, keep to 300hp or switch to manual. 300hp is plenty IMO.

I agree with the 300bhp with an auto trans. My car is running a 5 speed auto (not the greatest) and is running a supposed 312bhp on a Rica tune (car is a 2000 V70R with a supposed 265bhp as standard).

Anyone running over 300bhp on an auto is probably pushing the boundary (I have a spare auto trans in the garage). All the high power guys that I have read up on use the stick shift/manual option only.
