95 850T, Transmission issue, like it's in neutral, flashing arrow and CEL

Post by iruleyounow »

Okay so I'm currently halfway through my 700 mile trip. I was driving down the highway, going to visit my dad today, I was 20 miles away and all the sudden the yellow flashing arrows and CEL came on and I basically lost all power. It was like it was in neutral. I pulled over and turned the car off. I remembered something about the PNP switch so I turned the car to the ON position and slid the shifter up and down about 10 times and the arrow went away for about 2 minutes and came back on and the car would act like neutral again. So I called a tow and towed it to my dads. I started the car at my dads when it got here and the CEL was on but the light was off and I was able to drive it about 1000ft and park it without issue. Would this be the PNP? What should I do to make it home?? I have another 250 miles to go! Please help!

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the speedometer has been about 4-8mph off lately. Could a faulty speed sensor cause an issue here??

Did you checked transmission oil level?
PnP wouldn't put transmission in neutral.

Fill up transmission oil.

When able to, do a few drain and fills.

Transmission will be good till you die :p

The fluid is right where it needs to be. It didn't go into neutral it just acted as if it was. Gave it gas it and it wouldn't do anything. Then I pulled over turned it off and back on, put it in drive and it wouldn't move. Then I ran the shifter up and down and it put it in drive and it would move.

Does it slips or it doesn't?
When you hit the gas pedal does the rpm moves and car is not?
If so...it slips.
I'm affraid that transmission is toast.
When you turn the engine off,it cool itself a little and work normal...untill it heats up again.

Did/can you scan for codes? Sometimes you can get transmission codes through OBD2. I assume there is at least one due to the CEL on and the up arrow light.

That's exactly what it does. That sucks, a lot. I'd rev it in gear and the Rpms would go but the car wouldn't respond.

A speed sensor could give you an arrow but not the neutral action you are describing.

A good used transmission is probably about 500 bucks from a Volvo PnP, plus installation.

Last thing you can try for about 100 bucks is a oil drain and fill to see if that helps. Don't " flush it" or. Let someone put a flusher on it.

Since it's '95 he can read codes under the hood.Flash codes.

For obd2 he will need at least Vol-fcr.
Generic readers can't access anything except engine (ecu).

I had codes 514 and 323. Lock up slips or not engaged.
